The colour of the sun is due to the smoke in the sky from forest fires & not due to any manipulations on my part.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the Provencher Bridge in Winnipeg.

Time

This photograph was taken near sunset several years ago.

Lighting

The lighting, though not my own, was very special. There was a lot of smoke in the air at the time due to massive forest fires in a number of locations in Canada and the U.S., and so all day we had 'golden hour' lighting, then near sunset the sun would become red as in the photo and eventually vanish into the haze. (No processing was done on the photo - the colours are as they appeared when I was shooting.) I took thousands of photos during the weeks that the smoke was in the air because such conditions had never existed before and would likely not exist again here for a while (or at least so I hope, given that the cause was massive forest fires).

Equipment

A good (old) middle range camera - a Fuji Finepix S3400.

Inspiration

The smoke in the air was so heavy that it was possible to look at the sun without protection - it was a big reg-pink ball in the sky, and so I took many photos inspired by this - the sun at the top of a pole, the sun between two leaves, the sun hanging like a light-bulb under a light standard. ;-) :-)

Editing

None; the colours in the photo are as they were in real-life.

In my camera bag

Just my camera and occasionally my tripod. I rely a lot on my skills at composition and noticing when a shot 'is available', and so most of my photographs are taken with fairly simple equipment and require little post-processing to get the effect I was desiring. (*I have a lot of undertakings which do not leave me a lot of time for post-processing.)

Feedback

The sun moves perceptibly, even though we usually don't notice. This photo was taken at an extreme zoom level, and so the effect of the motion of the sun was more pronounced, and I had to shoot fast and reposition myself in order to get the sun positioned below the lamp 'just so'.
