Location
This photo was taken during the summer of 2015 when smoke in the air from numerous forest fires turned the sky and sun colours for weeks. I had to move around a fair bit to get this picture with the sun centered - the sun kept moving, dammit! ;-)Time
This was taken near sunset.Lighting
The special quality of the light was due to smoke in the air. It was like 'the golden hour' all day for weeks. I took thousands of photographs.....Equipment

I was walking over the Provencher bridge and got the idea as I passed by the light standard and saw the sun partially framed in the iron circle.Editing

In this case I was taking advantage of a sun and sky reddened from smoke; otherwise one would need to wait till near sunset and/or use a high aperture setting to tame the sun into photographability. One has to move around until one gets the shot framed just so.
