Behind The Lens

Location

I shot took this photo on Gloucester's Good Harbor Beach.

Time

I woke up around 5 a.m. on a summer morning and could not go back to sleep. I grabbed my Nikon and drove down to the beach for a walk, hoping to catch a nice sunrise.

Lighting

I love the way the beach glows at sunrise and how it silhouetted the seagull in the foreground.

Equipment

I shot this with a first generation Nikon D300. Not sure anymore which lens I used, but it was probably my old Nikon 28-105.

Inspiration

I love the deserted feeling to the beach in early morning. The glow from the sunrise was awe inspiring, and the seagull posed nicely for me.

Editing

I try not to do a lot of unnecessary post processing, but I did tweak the levels a bit to bring up the light.

In my camera bag

I try to travel light, but I always pack my D300 and a couple of lenses, usually my Nikon 28-300, and my Tamron 17-50 f2.8 wide angle lens.

Feedback

For a sunrise, try to get there about 20 minutes before the sun comes over the horizon to catch the pre-sunrise glow. Don't be afraid to try new camera angles, or to look down at the sand - you never know what may be right at your feet.
