Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Crabtree Falls on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Time

This is one of the first images I had ever taken that I considered "Art". The image was taken on April 6, 2013 at 11:50 am.

Lighting

I wanted the image to show just how stark and desolate the area was. I only used the natural light in the area. There was no flash.

Equipment

I used a Canon Rebel XS with an 18-55mm lens. The shutter speed was 1/200 and an ISO of 400. There was no other equipment used.

Inspiration

My husband and I were hiking and came upon the waterfall about a mile down a trail. There was a bridge to cross over to the other side of the river. As we were walking back across, I noticed this tree growing out of a rock. What determination it must have taken to grow against all odds!

Editing

The original image was in color. The only post processing I did was to convert it to black and white. I felt it would be more dramatic without the trees blooming.

In my camera bag

As an amateur I'm still adding to my collection. I continue to carry my Canon Rebel with me. It's a good choice for my boys when the urge strikes them to shoot something. My primary camera is now my Canon 70d. I also continue to carry my 18-55mm lens and have added a 55-250mm lens.

Feedback

I always have a camera with me. Don't be afraid to shoot everything. I'm continuing to learn everyday. It's easier for me to judge what worked and what didn't if I have that image to look at once I'm back home. Be prepared to shoot objects that aren't in your comfort zone and always be open to learning!
