I am fascinated how you manage the light in your pictures, magical indeed !

Location
It was taken on May 1st. This is a holiday in Poland and we were spending it at my partner's house outside the town (where I take most of my photos). It was rainy but nevertheless we took children for a walk. After quite a heavy rain the clouds started moving away and the sun was starting to show. This is the place where the village street ends and a country road leading to the quarry begins.Time
It was 5 p.m. the magic hour was just coming but we could see the sun only for a short momentLighting
Only natural light.Equipment
This was taken with my Sony A77 and an 85 1.4 by Samyang. I don't own that camera any more but I still use the same lens, only an E mount version.Inspiration
I had it in my mind for a long time. I was thinking of quite dark, mystical shot. I have taken something similar some time ago but I knew I could get a better effect. I had a general idea in my mind but I didn't plan the details. Those came quite spontaneously as the kids were playing in the puddles. I saw my little one picking the rocks and the road behind him and I knew this would be perfect.Editing
This edition was quite complicated. I was using more than two photos. Mostly to get a composition I wanted. The two main photos I needed were the photo of my son and a photo of what was above him. I use that technique quite often then I need a wider frame but can't take a step back. I had to import those to Photoshop, enlarge canvas and align the layers with those photos. After stitching those together I played with exposure to darken the background and lighten up my subject. I wanted more brightness on the subject, on the end of the road and on the sun. The rest of the scene was supposed to be dark. I ended with sharpening the subject. In my camera bag
Right now in my bag I have my Sony A7 and a Samyang 85 1.4 and a 50mm 1.4 by Canon with a Commlite adapter. I used to have more lenses with my A77 but I just sold it and I'm in the moment of replacing it. My bag is also always full of non photography stuff such as extra clothes, something to drink for the kids, sometimes even small toys because I take my photos on long walks with the kids :)Feedback
1. As for photographing kids in the manner: just let them be themselves, let them do what they like and observe to take the photo in the right moment. Take lots of photos so you have more material when you start working at your computer. 2. Look for the right light. For me back light works best. Also different weather conditions give portrait photos an interesting look. Use rain, snow, wind. to find a connection between your subject and nature. 3. To get that shallow depth of field: use a fast lens such as 85 1.4, try taking more than one photo and stitching it together in Photoshop. I usually need two horizontal photos to form a square format photo like this one.
