Location
From the parking lot at Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.Time
I took this in the middle of the afternoon, a time of day when I typically would not go out and shoot.Lighting
The fog was rolling in, giving a very subdued light even in the middle of the afternoon. It was the light that made me grab my camera and set up the tripod.Equipment
This shot was taken with a medium format digital camera (Phase One 645DF+) equipped with a Phase One IQ260 digital back and a 35mm prime lens. The camera was mounted on a Manfrotto tripod. Because the fog and light were saying "moody", I went for a long exposure (20" using a 6 stop Lee ND filter. I shot at f16 for deep depth of field to bring the links and bridge into sharp focus.Inspiration
I'd been to this spot before in bright sunlight. I had an idea for an interesting composition using the lines of the chain link barrier and the coastal barrier to lead the eye to the bridge, and I wanted mood given the fog. I think the combination of elements worked out well!Editing
RAW image file from the Phase One back was processed in Capture One, Phase One's amazing RAW processing engine. Other than minor adjustments to white balance and some cleaning up of sensor dust, this image is pretty much right out of the camera. No cropping. In my camera bag
I shoot mostly cities and landscapes using a Phase One 645DF+ medium format digital camera equipped with a Phase One IQ260 digital back and Schneider or Mamiya prime lenses. I love to shoot long exposures, and always have my Manfrotto tripod, a cable release and Lee ND filters (Big and Little Stoppers) with me. When I travel I sometimes take lighter gear (Canon 5D MkIII).Feedback
There are probably millions of images of landmarks like the Golden Gate bridge. When I visit these types of landmarks like to look for opportunities to capture something different - interesting light, different composition, long exposure, all of the above. Think about what you want to capture, look around, imagine the shot, set it up, make it happen!
