Location
This photograph was taken from the shore at Annisquam, MA, USA, north of Boston on the Massachusetts coast.Time
This photograph was taken about 20 minutes prior to sunset on a late summer evening.Lighting
I loved the way the back-lighting from the setting brought out the bright colors of the flowers in the foreground, and the way the light still gave beautiful pastel tones in the sky and on the lighthouse in the distance.Equipment
The image was taken with a PhaseOne medium format camera and a IQ260 digital back, mounted on a Manfrotto triipod. I used a Lee reverse ND graduated filter positioned along the horizon to block some of the direct sunlight and let me get a more even exposure of the foreground and distant points in the image.Inspiration
I love shooting at Annisquam lighthouse and was looking for something different this time. The colors and light just came together and inspired me to set up the camera and capture this image.Editing
The PhaseOne camera generates only RAW files, which I process using CaptureOne Pro software. I made minor adjustments to exposure in CaptureOne, then moved a TIFF file into Photoshop, where I removed dust spots and did a bit of dodging in dark areas of the image, particularly around the lighthouse. In my camera bag
When I'm shooting landscapes I carry a PhaseOne XF camera and IQ260 digital back. I have a few prime lenses for this camera. I also carry a Lee filter holder set and a few ND filters that I use in high dynamic range lighting situations or when I want to capture a long exposure. Although the PhaseOne IQ back can capture 14 stops of dynamic range, the ND filters still come handy from time to time.Feedback
I've been to this lighthouse many times. Usually I move close to the lighthouse, capturing the rocky landscape and lighthouse at close range. This time I stayed back and tried to capture something fresh. It helps to be able to visit a location on multiple occasions so you can explore and try to capture different types of shots each time. Most importantly, its always best to visit these places in great light (early morning or within an hour or two of sunset)!
