This photo was taken in my backyard. I studied photography in college and have an associates degree in the field.Time
This photo is one of my favorite photos I have taken over the years. It was taken at 1:06 p.m. on October 12, 2013.Lighting
I used natural lighting in this photograph.Equipment
I used a Canon 60D with EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 lens, Focal length at 170mm, Exposure at 1/250 at f/10 with an ISO of 500. Did not use flash.Inspiration
Being in a photography class you get assigned subjects you have to go out and photograph. This particular week I had to go photograph textures and patterns. I shot at the time what seemed to be good photos but after going through them I was not happy with any of them. It was the day before the assignment was due so I was left with one thing: photograph what is around me. I went into my backyard and noticed how the tree had a nice texture to it. Instead of shooting the whole tree, I decided to focus on small parts of it so you can see more of the texture.Editing
I changed the photograph to black and white and slightly brought down the highlights in light room.In my camera bag
The first thing I always pack is my Canon 60D with my EFS 18-200 lens. My macro 100mm lens which is really fun to experiment with, lens hoods, extra battery and memory cards, cleaning cloths, and a tripod. If I am going a trip to Yosemite I pack an extra camera body my rebel xti, extra batteries and memory cards for that camera, and a two rain sleeves for the cameras. I even have a Canon G16 point and shoot camera that i use when SLR camera are inconvenient or not allowed.Feedback
The only advice I can offer someone is not to be afraid of experimenting with your photographs. You could have a vision in mind of what you want your image to look like only to run into a roadblock whether its the weather, or your shooting to late for your liking. That's what happened here. I usually like to shoot earlier in the day but i no choice here. Instead the midday sun actually worked for this photograph by adding more contrast between the highlights and shadows. Also, do not think you have to include all of your subject, sometimes focusing on a small portion of it conveys more.
