I took it at the "parc des bastions" in Geneva, where ther is outdoor big chess set on the ground for visitors.Time
It was in the afternoon, at 1 pmLighting
I just used the sun, who gave me hard light and shadows for a strong contrast. The sun was very strong and high at this time, it was a really hot day of June, we couldn't have a light harder than that. The trees in the area gave us just the shadows that we need to add an ambiance.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7100 with a lens nikkor 18-300mm VRII, without flash or tripod.Inspiration
That was while a Photo marathon, we worked by duo, ant the thème at this moment was "black series", that was an evidence for me that i could make something in this particular place. In that park, you find always so many different poeple, the japanese tourist meet the homeless, the childs meet the oldest, and all that world is around the chess sets. My partner played the opponent, and i choose to put him in the end of line created by the bishop and the king, because i could imagine a lot of explanations, significations, of that line, bishop (le fou)-> to the king-> to the loss, and the mass around. I like to make think people by themselves, imagine their own story, transpose their feelings on the picture, that was in this way that i worked this scène. When we started to shoot, the other players choosed to look what we were doing at the end of their games, and put themselves outside the scène, so that was just perfect, all that mass of black and white pieces of the other chess sets, just like it was infinite, without poeple, only him.Editing
I have accentuated the contrast, reduce some highlights wich was too present on the white pieces, and reduce a little bit the exposition of the backgroud. In my camera bag
My Nikkor D7100, a Tripod, the nikkor 18-300 for his flexibility, a 35mm f/1.8G and a 50mm f/1.8D. I have always two Hoya filters in my bag , a circular polarizing, and a ND8 filter.Feedback
If i could gave an advice, it is this one: Wathever the weater, go out and shoot, you don't have to wait the perfect light, to make good pictures, you have the proof right here. An hard sun? no problem, shoot in the shadows, or use the hard contrast at your advantage. It rain? use it in your composition. To began to master the light, you need to use it in all the way it shine, and not just one.
