This photography has been taken while an urban festival named "Urban Geneva", it's a new festival about the urban culture, especially sports and dance. This festival happened in the new Geneva’s skaterpark, build recently in the square of Plainpalais.Time
This one has been taken in the end of afternoon. It was a long day, because the contests was distribute on 7 hours, while the break between the sessions of run, I was looking for other shows, so I was always with the reflex in my hand which was really exhausting at the end of the day.Lighting
The light was really capricious this day, the sun never stopped to play Peek-a-boo with us. However that light was a benefit, thanks to the grey clouds that filtered the sunray, which matched perfectly with the texture of concrete.Equipment
When I took this, I had a 18-300mm vrII and a Nikon D3100. And i was at 300mm on aps-c, so i was very far of it! This lens hasn’t the best sharp, but it is really useful for that kind of events, where you need to be really reactive, and which doesn't allow to switch often your lense.Inspiration
I love the BMX stunts since I was a kid, I like a lot of "urban sports" but this one especially because it's looks like a dance, the bicycle is the partner of the rider for the time of a waltz. There is a kind of fluidity that I don't find in other stunt disciplines, and I wanted to show it. The position of the rider was just perfect to illustrate this vision, that's why I named it "Wheel's dance".Editing
To keep that "urban feelings" I reduced saturation a little bit, accentuated contrast and shadows and after that, I’ve push on the clarity. I wanted to enforce the shades of grey and black for the ambiance and show the loneliness of that kid rider in this structure higher than him.In my camera bag
The reflex (D7100 actually, D3100 at the moment of the picture), my 18-300mm "odd-job", Two Fixed Focal(35mm 1.8 G useful when I can't stand back a lot, 50mm 1.8G in other case). Ideally I take two reflexs for that kind of exhibition now, one with the zoom, the other with a fixed focal to optimize my possibilities in every situation.Feedback
I haven't yet a lot of experience, but I think that patience and observation of the environment is the most essential. This particular day, I have chosen a point of view that gave me a look on most of the skatepark and where I had that concrete background, but I had to wait a lot to have a rider which finally made a trick where I expected to, and that is the result of that waiting time. So, even if you miss of experiment and knowledge or you have low level stuff, take the time to think about “what do you want to show”, wait the moment, and you’ll take awesome pics anyway.
