A wonderfully eye catching image. I love the pose and use of the background to isolate the rider. Nice work. Thank you for entering my challenge.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took it in Geneva, Switzerland, at the new skatepark of "Plainpalais", during an urban sport contest.

Time

It was in the afternoon, while a contest, I remember that i was there from Ten a.m. until 6 p.m. I had took a lot of pictures already, but I wanted one in the bowl with this concrete background, and at least, that kid, one of the last concurrent, made a perfect trick in it. I had already some good photographies, but that one was the one I wanted to do.

Lighting

The sun was playing at "peek a boo" with some clouds, that was perfect to have a diffuse lightning in accordance to the uniformity of the concrete of the skatepark.

Equipment

I used a nikon d3100 and a Nikkor 18-300mm 3.5 - 6.3 for is flexibility, I just took a few pictures of the day with a 50mm, but for that, I needed to be the most reactive I could be. The skatepark is really big, I know it well, and for this angle I had to take the teleobjective from the other side of the skatepark to point that place.

Inspiration

I was thinking about that fmx is like dance with a bmx, and I wanted to show that, the movement of that kid in symbiosis with his gear, was just awesome. When I saw the result at home, for this one, there was no doubt that I will work on it first.

Editing

I erased a black line in the top, which was the edge of the bowl, I wanted to have only the immaculate concrete. When I did that, I just had to reinforce some local contrast due to the "grey light" on the subject, I worked on the uniformity of the concrete, with some brush I increased a little bit its smooth aspect, the natural vignetting of the objective has been kept to highlight the runner.

In my camera bag

Now I always take a nikkor 24-70 2.8, I really love this optics, i also take a 35mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.8 in reserve if there is some problem or if I need more light. it depends what I'm going to do with. The 18-300 that I used here, I take it only when I go for animals pictures or events where I can't easily or quickly be near my subjects. His sharpness is not as good as my other optics, but I think it is better to sucess the picture that I want, than have a better quality and miss it.

Feedback

You need to know your environnement, go on place before the day and have a lot of patience. A good thing to do is go there some days before the event, take pictures of the scene, then imagine your subject in it. Usually for that kind of contest, I should say, you have to move, change point of view, go to different angle, but this day, I wanted a picture at a specific point of the skatepark, so i choose an angle on it, but where I could take some other pictures too. I had a view on the most part of the place. And patience make that happened, when I finally had it after some hours to stay like a picket, I started to move, happy to have done what I was came for. Imagine if I had moved just at this time...
