Behind The Lens

Location

The photograph of a KLM Boeing 747 head on, was taken at Maho Beach, island of Saint Martin, in the territory of Sint Maarten (Dutch side).

Time

The photo was taken around noon, or shortly after. This is the KLM 747 flight into Maho Beach resulting in the great photos of the jumbo jet passing several hundred feet over the beach goers. A bar on the beach posts the inbound flight arrival times for the day on a chalkboard at their entrance.

Lighting

The flight arrives in the early afternoon in the Caribbean, normally the skies are crystal clear.

Equipment

For this photo I used a Nikon D7000, paired with a Nikon 18-300mm lens. Photo was taken hand held.

Inspiration

I've always been amazed of photographs of the flights coming in low above Maho Beach. Especially the KLM 747, as I think it is the only scheduled 747 into the island. I was on a cruise ship and grabbed a taxi ... and got lucky!

Editing

This photo was cropped, to bring it in a little closer for the viewer.

In my camera bag

Normally I cary two DSLR cameras, one with a telephoto zoom lens, the other with a wide angle (10-20 mm) lens. They are able to handle most shooting situations I expect to encounter doing travel or street photography.

Feedback

I'd recommend doing a little research for the photograph you desire. Google is a great tool for determining best locations, times, settings and ideas... Look at the images that were taken at the location or of an object and ask yourself what you can do to improve upon an already great photo. Grab your gear, check the settings (twice), be ready, and be flexible for when things don't go as expected.
