I took this photo at La Jolla Shores beach in San Diego, California. My wife and I went on a walk to enjoy the outdoors after a storm.Time
It was near the end of the day. Probably about an hour before sunset. I love the color the sun emits when it is lower in the sky.Lighting
When the sun is lower in the sky it emits a warmer tone. This allowed those wonderful golden hues to poke through the purple clouds.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5D Mark 2, canon F4 24-105L lens, on a manfrotto Tripod.Inspiration
I had just moved down to San Diego with my wife and she wanted to show me the world famous Scripps Pier. It is so darn photogenic. Between the lighting, colors, clouds, and reflections in the sand, the opportunity was too good to pass up.Editing
I toned down the whites in the photo in order to bring in some more of the colors. I also brought out a little more detail in the blacks so there would be a full tonal range. In my camera bag
I have a Canon 5D Mark 2, a speedlight flash, 24-105 F4 L lens, a nifty 50 F1.2, a canon 70-200 F2.8 L lens, a 100mm 1.8 Macro, and a wider angle lens that I am currently blanking on. My bag is pretty heavy but I like to carry a full array of lenses to be prepared for anything.Feedback
Patience. If you see a shot you know you want to take don’t be afraid to take multiple exposures from different angles, at different settings, and lengths of exposures. Your focal point will change how your camera picks up the light so change that a couple times as well. Low tide is always a great time to shoot at the ocean as it allows for reflections in the sand; making for a more interesting photo.
