Location
This was taken in my front yard near a bird feeder that we keep out for the birds in winter.Time
I remembered that the birds were fairly used to me when I came out in the morning to fill the feeder so this particular morning I came out with my camera as well.Lighting
It was an overcast day which was fine so that I could keep some detail in the blacks of the Chickadee's feathers.Equipment
I was equipped with my Nikon D3 and a 80-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens.Inspiration
I have always wanted to get some shots of birds so I thought that I would try with the birds in our front yard. I knew that I would be able to stand pretty close to the birds as long as I moved fairly slowly. They get in to kind of a feeding frenzy when I would bring out the freshly filled feeders so this time I came prepared with my camera too.Editing
The post processing is pretty straight forward. I first do a bit of work in Photoshop then I bring it in to Lightroom to add a few tweaks and finish the image. In my camera bag
I have a nice camera backpack that fits my Nikon D3, Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8, Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8, Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8, Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 Macro and a Sigma 14mm f/2.8 along with extra batteries and Nikkor flash and a loupe. I also keep some snacks in there just in case.Feedback
Patience is the biggest thing. I would love to have a longer lens to capture these types of images but alas I will need to hold out until I can win the lottery I think :)
