Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken after midnight at the D.H. Day Farm in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
Time
I wanted to try shooting the stars so I arrived around midnight but the moon was still too bright. I did do some practice shots while the moon was still just above the horizon but I like the ones better with just the stars lighting the night sky.
Lighting
The lighting of this barn is actually quite interesting. While the exposure was fairly long it still left the barn fairly dark. So, I decided to see what it looked like if I painted it with my mag flashlite.
Equipment
The equipment I bring to shoots are my Nikon D3 with various Nikkor lenses. I used my Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 wide angle zoom for this shot. I also use a carbon fiber Gitzo tripod.
Inspiration
My inspiration for this shot was actually other Viewbug members. I had been seeing all these really beautiful night time starry shots and I wanted to see if I could do one also. I chose this location because I knew that there would be minimal light pollution, being in the National Lakeshore, plus they are just really cool barns.
Editing
I don't do a lot of special processing on my images. I usually just lighten or brighten as necessary and check the contrast.
In my camera bag
My camera bag holds my Nikon D3 and an assortment of Nikkor lenses. I also keep extra Li-ion batteries for my camera and a handful of AA batteries. There is also a cloth to clean lenses and protective filters and a few granola bars just in case.
Feedback
Get plenty of rest before you go out and take some warm clothes and gloves with you. Also, a lens cloth was pretty important for this shot because of the dew building up on my camera during the shoot.
