This photo was taken in my backyard.Time
It was taken around 3:00 in the morning with no moon in sight.Lighting
I was really liking the Milky Way and how it looked in my view finder but the barn was too dark. I have done some light painting in the studio before so I decided to try it with my flashlight and see what would happen. You are seeing the results.Equipment
I used my Nikon D3 camera with a 17-35mm f/2.8 lens. I also used a Gitzo tripod and my MAG Light.Inspiration
I had originally gone out to capture the Northern Lights. I had been viewing all the cool shots of the Northern Lights in Viewbug and really wanted to try it myself sometime. This particular night was supposed to have good conditions fro viewing them but when I went out none were to be found. The Milky Way was quite beautiful so I shot anyway.Editing
I don't do a lot of special processing on my images. I usually just lighten or brighten as necessary and check the contrast. In my camera bag
My camera bag holds my Nikon D3 and an assortment of Nikkor lenses. I also keep extra Li-ion batteries for my camera and a handful of AA batteries. There is also a cloth to clean lenses and protective filters and a few granola bars just in case.Feedback
Get plenty of rest before you go out and take some warm clothes and gloves with you. Also, a lens cloth was pretty important for this shot because of the dew building up on my camera during the shoot.
