Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on the Falling Waters Trail in New Hampshire, USA.

Time

It was about 11:30AM.

Lighting

The waterfall was inside the forest and it was partly cloudy. I was waiting until the sunlight was covered by some clouds, so there were no highlights in the scene and the light was equal throughout the image.

Equipment

For this image I used my Canon 5D Mark II with the 16-35 f2.8L II USM lens. At f/16 the exposure time was long enough to make the water as smooth as it is. It was not necessary to use ND filters, since the sun was blocked by clouds and the waterfall is located inside the forest.

Inspiration

When I saw the waterfall I first thought I have to stand in the water for this shot. The composition makes the water to flow into the viewer. My intention is to make the viewer think he gets wet. The fall foliage adds nice colors to the scene.

Editing

I always try to capture the scene how it truly looks like. So I do not do a lot of post processing, except for some standard stuff. I add some clarity and sharpness.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my 5D Mark II with the 16-35 f/2.8L II USM mounted. In addition I have in my bag the Canon 24mm TSE lens and the LEE Filter system with all the filters I need. I don't leave without the cable release, tripod and additional battery packs.

Feedback

My advice is, to take time for your shot. Do not rush from location to location. Enjoy the locations one by one and stay as long as it needs. Feel the scene and the silence, depending on where and what you shoot, and walk around at your location to figure out what the best perspective is.
