Location
This shot was taken from Pere Marquette Beach located along the coast of West Michigan at Muskegon Harbor. The beach grasses always create a beautiful silhouette against the amazing sunset sky.Time
I love shooting during the "golden hour" which is right at sunset. I'm not the only one. This is a favorite for many photographers because the lighting is so much more intense and the colors created by the setting sun are brilliant.Lighting
As much as I love the "golden hour", I love the "blue hour" even better. I am normally up quite early so I get to catch the sky getting light before the sunrise. Most often the sky is a glorious deep color of orange. It is fun to capture the progression of the sun rising and the differences in the sky as it does.Equipment
I shoot with a Nikon D7500 and an 18-300mm lens. I will switch between that and my wide angle lens if I want to capture a fuller look of the sky. I most always use a tripod with a remote shutter so that there is no movement while making the image.Inspiration
The West Michigan coast is breathtaking. If you didn't know better, you might mistakenly think you are at the coast of the Pacific Ocean...but no salt and no sharks! Lake Michigan is never boring...always boats, ships, and lots of kite surfers make the view interesting. But the weather patters created by the lake itself make for an ever-changing view to capture.Editing
I try to do very little post-processing. Most often I may straighten the horizon a tad (a crooked horizon is a "sin" for photographers!). I also may crop the shot and help the lighting a bit if it needs it. I try very hard to take the photo so it closely resembles the real view.In my camera bag
In my bag, I carry a number of filters, an extra battery, a number of extra SD cards, rain gear, and a small, portable tripod.Feedback
My best advice is to do a little research so you know where to be at just the right moment. As I said, the sunset is different each time I shoot so knowing the area where I want to shoot is most important. I always get there earlier than needed to get my equipment set up the way I want it. I also tend to walk away from where other people and photographers are so that my image will be unique. Patience is paramount!
