Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my Home-Studio in Antwerp, Belgium. With flash-lights and a white background.

Time

Time of day in studio is not very important but I remember it was a cold evening. So I turned on the heat in my studio for the model. When he came in, he said. Damn... it's like summer in here. But in fact it was a cold autumn(winter) evening.

Lighting

This picture is taken in a studio with a White Background. I work for this particular pictures with flash-light. In this composition I had 2 flashlights on tripods and 1 hanging above his head. These where all set to 1/2 stop.

Equipment

The Camera I took this picture with was a Nikon D300 with a Nikkor 18-200mm lens. The photo was taken with a free hand, not a tripod. I also use Flashlights.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this photo I got originally from a bodypaint picture. And I thought, hmmm... How can I create a same feeling but something different and original. So I came up with the dirt-version of it.

Editing

Like many photographers I love photoshop and for this picture I used photoshop to clean the dirt around his feet. And adjust the color of his skin (just by a little) So I would get more contrast and detail.

In my camera bag

Well that's a good question to ask me what I have in my bag for equipment. I always walk around with my Nikon D300 and 3 lenses: 28-200mm, 12-24mm en fix 50mm. A tripod, flashlight and portable ContinueLights. These work on batteries and are great to shoot with people in forrest of by evening on location. In studio I have everything I need.

Feedback

The recipe for making this kind of dirt is very easy. Take a glass of water and poor it over 4 hands of dirt. Then you get a muddy effect that sticks but is not liquid. Now you need a model that has a lot of time because the preparing takes about 30 minutes and is very nasty. After that you can shoot your pictures. Don't forget to clean up.
