On May 25th 1900 the steamer Kakapo was travelling from England to Australia. During a gale near Cape Town with visibility close to zero, the officer on watch mistook Chapman's Peak for Cape Point and ordered full speed to the left, sending the ship onto the beach at Noordhoek, where it still is. All the crew members were safe but it was not possible to recover the ship and now what remains is the boiler, the rudder and the ribs buried in the sand.
