Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Mossel Bay, South Africa, a great place for surfing

Time

It was June, a cold Winter day, late afternoon, I had been shooting all day.

Lighting

That day I shot maybe 200 photos, and the only ones worth processing were the last ones, of course. I always try to shoot early in the morning or late in the afternoon, or even at twilight or at night (long exposures). The late afternoon light gave a lot of drama to the photo, which would be much duller otherwise.

Equipment

I shot this photo with a Canon PowerShot SX20IS, no tripod, no flash, nothing else.

Inspiration

Well, I spent many hours shooting the waves at Mossel Bay, so there are some hundreds of photos behind this one. I wanted to shoot something not easily seen, but shooting waves is extremely difficult, you need to anticipate their movements somehow: the moment you see a beautiful wave it is too late to shoot, it is already gone!

Editing

I did a lot of post-processing with photoshop. The late afternoon light helped me, but I had to darken the photo a lot. Also some dodge and burn, and of course I converted the color photo to black and white. I did not use any plug-ins, usually I am at ease with the normal photoshop presets for B&W.

In my camera bag

I had to sell everything recently, but I used a Canon 6D + Canon 24-105, a Canon PowerShot SX20IS, and a Samsung Galaxy Note first series, which worked well for more than 7 years! A polarizer filter, a Manfrotto tripod and a flexible trigger, as I used to shoot a lot of long exposures. I am looking forward to buy again a Canon 6D + Canon 16-35 + Manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

My advice is to spend a lot of time shooting in the right place at the right time: in this case Mossel Bay, South Africa, but can be any other place good for surfing. Decent equipment and some post-processing will help, and a lot of patience. Watch out for the weather forecasts (bad weather, storms are ok), and be very quick as soon as you see the waves starting to get the right shape.
