Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the 2015 Gardenscapes in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The annual event is held indoors in one of the halls at Prairieland Park.

Time

The image was taken in mid afternoon inside a building. It was April, and, along with this orchid, many other tempurature sensitive flowering plants and succulents were on display. Saskatchewan weather can still be cold in April.

Lighting

I had no control over the lighting. I took many photos that day under the high overhead lights in the hall.

Equipment

I used my Canon T2i, with the flash off, and a 55-250 mm telephoto lens. I really like the versatility of this particular lens. I may have used my tripod, but don’t quote me on that.

Inspiration

I thought the orchids on display were beautiful so I spent a lot of time in that section. I found this particular orchid gorgeous.

Editing

I use Lightroom 5 photo editing software. I really like how easy it is to learn and utilize.

In my camera bag

I take everything with me: my Canon T2i, a 50mm lens, a 55 - 250 mm lens, a 100mm 1:2.8 macro lens, and an 18 - 55 mm lens. I take it all with me in my camera bag, because I never know what will present itself and I like to be prepared. I also have an older model tripod that I pack when I travel. I put skylight filters on all my lenses in case of scratches - cheaper to replace a scratched filter than a lens. Skylight won’t alter the colours appreciably.

Feedback

Get to know your camera and its settings. Get comfortable with it by practicing taking photos at all times of the day. Keep taking photos of things you find beautiful. It doesn’t matter if anyone else likes the subjects in your pictures, so long as they appeal to you. Look for the little things that get overlooked, like insects or spider webs after a rain or when the fog shrouds everything. I look for patterns as well, like a chain link fence covered in hoar frost. Play around with your editing software, too. The best piece of advice I can pass on to you is this: Have fun!
