Behind The Lens

Location

On a sandy beach at Lake Coeur d'Alene in Idaho.

Time

In the afternoon.

Lighting

This was just natural lighting.

Equipment

Sony Nex-6 with a 200mm lens.

Inspiration

I was down by the edge of the water, and there were dozens of seagulls and geese. Lots of squawking and noise I wanted to capture some of the interaction between the birds. I got down low so I would be on their level.

Editing

I used iphoto sliders to sharpen the image, and I cropped out about 10 other birds. Amazingly, I did not see this angry little bird until I saw it on my computer. That's when I decided to do major cropping!

In my camera bag

Sony Nex-6 17-55mm, 50-210mm, 14mm, fish-eye lens. I always carry extra batteries and memory cards. I also use a bean bag for stability. I have trouble with a tripod, particularly with birds.

Feedback

Get low to the ground. Go to locations where the birds are used to human activity, then they don't scatter when you appear. Maybe take some bread crumbs! If your photo shows lots of birds and only a few are "doing" something, crop to focus on the active birds.
