This photo was taken in my hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A large quantity of my photos come from this beautiful city!Time
This photo was taken shortly after the sun had completely disappeared beyond the city. There's still the slightest hint of blue in the sky, but the timing was based on bringing out the colors of the city lights and their vibrant reflections in the river.Lighting
Pittsburgh's skyline can be seen from so many different angles coming into the city that it seems to be constantly changing! I very much appreciate the contours of the city skyline as a whole as well as the individual buildings. I think the lighting in this case really shows the details of the structures, and then outputs them into more abstract was through the way the lights reflect off of the water.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon EOS REBEL T3; aperture: f/3.5; ISO: 3200; Exposure: 1/8; Focal Length: 18/1.Inspiration
Again, Pittsburgh seems to be constantly changing and evolving and I never grow tired of it. One night I was in Station Square down by the water and noticed the intense and saturated city was being translated by the water. The big city life full of people and happenings converted into simplistic colors and forms through the water below was of great interest to me; to think about the comparisons of simplicity and complexity in a place we live.Editing
For this cityscape I did basic edits in Photoshop such as leveling, contrast, and saturation. I also reflected the image with a slight transparency to emphasize the repetitive nature of the edges and color patterns within the city and it's reflection. In my camera bag
Currently, I'm always packing my Canon Rebel T5i with a kit lens, 50mm portrait lens, and of course my new baby which is my 70-200mm Canon zoom lens. I've began attempting to master the external flash which has proved to be helpful. Those are the basics, but I've also just made an estate sale find of an older Minolta film camera with a 58mm lens. This, is teaching me patience and framing, and my favorite, going back to some basics.Feedback
I'm more of an emotion based photographer first, and a technical photographer second, along with many other things down the line. Therefore, I would say don't think that you need the best of the best equipment to get you the results you're looking for. Sure, it can help, but if you are actively seeking beauty in this world and have an impulse to capture it with some sort of technology, you're ahead of the game! Technically speaking, wait for your prime lighting, master your shutter speed, and always pay attention to your composition!
