Location
This photo was taken along the Monongahela River on an ideal fall afternoon.Time
It was taken during one of my walks through the town of California PA during my college days. This is my absolute favorite time of day. When the orange evening sun highlights the burning fall colors of the leaves on the ground and on the hillside. The formation of the clouds, the colors in the sky, and the calm river water enabling a reflection of the whole scene added even more intrigue to this shot.Lighting
I wanted the image to capture the lighting of the sun setting in this specific moment and place. I made sure to capture all of the elements of the land, water, and sky in the composition so the viewer could see how the setting light interacted with each form.Equipment
I used a Canon Rebel t3 with the kit lens to get this shot.Inspiration
My college campus and town were very small, with not much to do, but for four years I found extreme beauty in the most unexpected places. I just had to look for it. This is my favorite spot in town, and this photo is still one of my favorites to this day. It portrays a space that is often overlooked, in one of its most beautiful moments in time. That was my goal for this image.Editing
I used basic Photoshop editing to get the image to look more like it did in person. I did basic brightness, contrast, and saturation edits. In my camera bag
My standard is a Canon Rebel t5i with a 24-70mm lens. In my bag, I always have a 50mm portrait lens, a 70-200mm zoom lens, and an external flash just in case. I still use my t3 as a backup, and have a Minolta film camera for special occasions.Feedback
My advice first of all would be to capture the moments that make you feel something, that will take you back to the moment when you shot it. Beyond that, I like to photograph landscapes in lighting that showcase the scenes natural forms, textures, and colors. To get this result, I have found that shooting right when the sun is not directly seen, and goes behind some cloud coverage allows this effect. It allows for the natural light to be utilized, without it being too harsh or too dark.
