I was actually this close. This bear stuck his head in my Tundra buggy window, I dropped to the floor and captured this close-up. I was lucky not to have been pulled out the window as I had my camera strap around my neck. I was told not to get that close again. Polar bears can smell up to 60 miles (yes sixty). They breath in from the front nostrils but notice the side slit from which they exhale so as not to contaminate the smells entering. Evolution at its best.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from a Tundra Buggy at Cape Churchill, Manitoba Canada on Hudson Bay in Nov 2006

Time

Taken 9:64 AM

Lighting

This was the largest Polar Bear we saw in 2 week. He was so large he stood up and stuck his head in the window I was shooting from. I had to drop down shoot up with ambient light but I have 1 EV exp. compensation to keep the whites white.

Equipment

Canon EOD 5D, 24-105 Canon EF len at 105mm, F/7.1, ISO 1000, 1/250sec

Inspiration

It was a quick spur of the moment capture that was not planned but we were on the tundra in Tundra buggies to shoot the polar bears. When he stuck his head in the window I quickly captured the shot. I was admonished as I had the camera strap around my neck and if the bear had tried to grab the camera I would have been bear meat.

Editing

Minimal an the usual contrast and sharpening.

In my camera bag

Mostly 4 Canon bodies, Canon and Sigma lens, Flash and accessories, Filters,

Feedback

Go to Canada Churchill and stay in the Tundra Lodge on the polar Ice. It is an experience of a life time but very very cold.
