A spectacular in-the-moment capture, Emile. I am impressed--with your skill in the capture and with the skill and bravery of both the cowboys and the bull. The whole of this marvelous image brings us the excitement of the rodeo, with all the action and all the responses by the audience as well.

This is an amazing capture.Fantastic composition captured at the right time which must have been a split second. However I must mention that I am opposed to cruelty to animals. I live in South Africa where hunting is part of our tradition and I am opposed to hunting as well.

In all my years of photographing rodeos and bull riding I have never seen a bull flying sideways like this before. Lot of dust also flying. He came out the chute flying forward then twisted and flew as captured. Needless to say he did not come down on all 4's and the rider was given a re-ride. Neither were injured.

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken at the Del Rio Rotary Independence Day Rodeo on 07/05/2013 using Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and canon 70 to 200 mm lens at 115 mm and F/2.8 , aperture priority at 1/750 sec and -1EF. I did use canon 580 flash. My Rotary Club has been putting on an Independence Day Rodeo for the past 14 years and I have been the primary photographer. This bull did not land on all 4 hooves as you might imagine and the bull rider was given a re-ride later. Not only have I been photographing this rodeo I have also photographed the action each year since 2006 at the famed George Paul Memorial Bull Riding and in 2011 I was selected for full access pass for photography at the Cheyenne Frontier Days the largest Rodeo in America. Emile G. Abbott, MD Photographer.
Time
Late at night
Lighting
Photographing the rapid action after dark even with the arena lights on is a difficult task. Standard Flash units I do use but they are of limited value at that distance.
Equipment
Handheld, Canon EOS 1D mark IV , Canon 70-200 F/2.8 lens, Canon 580 flash.
Inspiration
I have been photographing rodeos and bull rides since 2006 for the George Paul Memorial Bull Riding and the Del Rio Rotary Club.
Editing
I do very little post processing except perhaps slight sharpening and de-noise with Define.
In my camera bag
Canon bodies and lenses, several tripods, Sing-ray filters, multiple flash units, other misc. stuff.
Feedback
Practice makes perfect. Use burst mode and with this fast of action I shoot in JPEG
