Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a local zoo. It was a real spur of the moment capture. I was right against the protective glass, and was so pleased that this amazing beast came over to me. As I raised my camera to get a quick picture, he pulled this face.... it was as thought he was smiling for me!

Time

It was taken mid to late afternoon. We were having our last look at the tigers before heading home.

Lighting

It was natural light, and a little cloudy if I remember correctly! The enclosure also provided some shade.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D80, handheld with no flash. Nikon 18-135mm lens.

Inspiration

I absolutely love big cats (and little ones). These are such amazing animals, I can spend hours watching them. I especially love this image because it shows just how huge and powerful those teeth and jaws are.

Editing

The only processing was a slight crop. He really was this close!

In my camera bag

I now have a Nikon D7100, 18-135mm lens, 50mm lens, 55-300 lens, SB900 flash gun. Nikon D80 as a spare. ND filters.

Feedback

Always have your camera with you! This sounds obvious to a fellow photographer, but it really is that simple. This really was a lucky shot, I could not have planned it at all. I was just watching the tigers and this chap came over to see me. As I raised the camera, just hoping for a picture (anything really as they can move quite quickly!!) and he pulled this face. I try not to leave the house without a camera in my bag or car.
