Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a local zoo in Norfolk UK. I was part of a small group of photographers who had booked the day specifically to photograph big cats. We were allowed to put our lenses right up against the wire fence, and this chap even let me stroke his fur which made this the best day ever!

Time

This shot was taken mid morning I think, and really set me up for the rest of the day, I was buzzing!

Lighting

It was a cloudy day, which provided beautiful lighting so nothing was over or under exposed.

Equipment

This was taken handheld on a Nikon D80 with 18-135mm lens, no flash.

Inspiration

I love big cats, so attending this photography day was a no brainer for me.I was so excited just to be that close to the fence, so when this guy started to strut over to me, I had to remind myself to raise the camera and shoot!

Editing

The only post processing here was a slight boost in clarity.

In my camera bag

I still have my Nikon D80 as a spare, but I now use a Nikon D7100 with an 18 - 135mm lens. I've normally got a macro and a wide angle with me too, depending on what my mission or hopes are for the day. Spare memory cards, batteries filters and shutter release.

Feedback

Book onto a specific photography day if you want to photograph these kinds on animals this closely. This way you will get safe access that also ensures the well being of the animals concerned. The animals welfare should always be the top priority, and as photographers we should always be mindful of this.
