I like your black and white technique, something I want to work on for myself.

Excellent image of London Tower Bridge. The image can be improved further by cropping under-exposed portions on both sides, making bridge even more prominent

Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken early one morning on the south bank of The Thames. Im a self taught photographer who enjoys long exposure photography. Living close to London i get many chances to take long exposure cityscapes of this wonderful city and its amazing architecture.

Time

Waking up early one January morning i headed into London as the morning was bright and looked like a great day to go shooting. The sun was low and bright the cold winter air was refreshing. I got down to The Thames at about 8AM and started setting up. I had time it really well as the tide was out and i could get close to the bridge. I spend a couple of hours down there shooting the bridge and the city skyline. It was one of my most productive days shooting.

Lighting

The winter sun was low and took its time rising. It was a very clear and bright morning, the sun lit up the bridge so well. I also have this shot in colour, the bright blue shy reflecting in The Thames really makes a vibrant photograph. I personally prefer the Black and White image, it shows shuck great detail.

Equipment

This photograph was taken using my Nikon DF, a fantastic camera. My 17-35mm lens, an old classic lens. Has amazing optics and produces fantastic results. Also looks great on the DF with its vintage styling. It was mounted on my tripod for the 397second exposure. I had a 10 stop filter and a 16 stop filter creating the long exposure

Inspiration

London really is one of the greatest cities in the world. It has many of the worlds top landmarks and Tower Bridge is one of them. Its such an iconic bridge, recognised by people all over the world. With the modern city of London growing, (you can see The Walkie Talkie Building and The Gherkin in the background) the older buildings such as this sublime bridge start to stand out more and more.

Editing

Using Lightroom i converted this image into black and white. Using old style dodge and burning techniques i then brought out some detain in the bridge, easy on this occasion as the wonderful light i had during shooting. I added natural density grad filters to the sky and the water. This brought the focus onto the bridge and gave it a nice frame.

In my camera bag

My equipment bag is forever changing. Depending on where I'm going and what i inter to shoot. The Nikon DF is always there as its my only camera body. My natural density filters are a must have for the long exposure photography that i concentrate on. Along with this i need a remote, I've just bought a trigger trap remote and its pretty impressive (available here http://www.triggertrap.com/#_l_oz). Spare batteries, SD cards, cleaning cloths and a tripod are a must. As for lenses, i'll always have a wide lens 17-35mm or 20mm prime. It all depends what your going out to shoot, I'm not one for caring everything i own with me.

Feedback

As London is so popular and Tower Bridge photographed so often its essential that you try to make your photo better than the rest. Be it the best there is or something a little different. An early start at this location is essential as it will be busy for most of the day. The weather can have a big impact, here i had clear sky's. Its what i was looking for, but a nice moody cloudy sky would work just as well. For inspiration please feel free to have a look at my new website www.LondonFineArtPhotography.co.uk
