Behind The Lens

Location

San Quintin Baja Mexico

Time

This was about 11:00 at night.

Lighting

I light painted the boat with a flashlight.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D5200, Tokina 11-18mm f2.8, a MePhoto tripod and a manual shutter release cable.

Inspiration

I saw the boat during the day and it was so rusty and beached on a sand bar that I knew I had to come back at night and capture it with the milky way as the background. I love night photography and capturing the milky way is so fun for me because in Southern California there are very few places we can it.

Editing

Yes I used LightRoom and evened out the lighting on the boat and brushed the sky to drop the exposure then brushed the milky way separate to add clarity, a slight bump in exposure, tiny bit of saturation and clarity. I adjusted the WB as well and several other small tweeks.

In my camera bag

Nikon D750, Nikon 14-24mm f2.8, Nikon 50mm f1.4, Sigma 120-400mm f5.6 lots of filters such as ND, polarizer and GND. two cable shutter releases, extra bateries & charger, cleaning kit, snacks and a drink, Mephoto tripodand a water proof shell for my backpack. It hets heavy so I pack it all into a Lowpro backpack. When I'm traveling I bring my Nikon D5200 and Tokina 11-18mm f2.8 as a back up camera.

Feedback

Try all types of settings but use the 400 or 500 rule depending on how large you intend to print. 400 divided by focal length you are shooting gets you seconds of exposure time before noticeable star trailing. When light painting try and do even strokes and a little light can go a long way so experiment. The key is to get a solid foundation for your settings and play from there. Most important have fun!
