Amazing shot! Unfortunately it makes me feel sad because the last time I saw elephants they were being treated poorly and I felt for them I hope these elephants have a happier life and am glad they have each other.

I visited a rescue centre for elephants in Thailand and captured many wonderful images of these beautiful animals. This particular image was special as it showed the love that they still shared even after incredible torment and injury. They now live out their lives with each other in a natural environment. I felt honoured to wander amongst them and share their story.Time
The particular image was taken early afternoon in between rain showers.Lighting
Anyone who knows me, knows that I love clouds. Not only do they add drama to any image, they are also your best friend when it comes to lighting as they are the biggest light diffuser you could ever dream of. They remove harsh shadows and drop years of anyone. In this case, it enable me to see all the fine detail of these beautiful creatures.Equipment
I avoid using a tripod unless necessary as I like the freedom of being able to move around. And when you are maneuvering around such large animals you certainly don't want to be anchored to the ground. You need to move out of their way at a moments notice. My equipment consisted of a Canon 5D MkIII, 70-200 F4.0 with no flash.Inspiration
I had spent the day with these amazing animals, wandering in the fields with them as well as feeding and bathing them in the river. To say they are incredible is an understatement. They have endured such a sad lifetime and yet they show no anger and are very gentle with you. You could not help but be amazed at their physical and emotional strength.Editing
Very little processing was done to this image. I wanted to keep it as natural as possible. In my camera bag
I normally carry a range of gear depending on the occasion. A Canon 5D MkIII, 70-200 F4.0, 17-40 F4.0 are always my starting point. Then I add a couple of flashes, more bodies and lenses and accessories as needed.Feedback
I once heard a ranger give a photographer the best advice for nature photography. Always leave the animal the same way you approached it. If you sneak up to an animal so as not to startle it, why would you then startle it when you leave. You are in their territory so show them respect for their environment. By doing this you might end up getting more shots then you bargained for. Animals are usually peaceful creatures. Study them and they will reward you with amazing experiences.
