Great capture, you put a lot of forethought into your moon shots.

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured in small park in west Toronto. It has a wonderful treeline to capture the rising Moon. To keep the the trees and Moon both in focus I setup on the other side of the park to get just the right focal distance. I used to call this my favorite tree as I was able to get great shots through the opening. An ice storm damaged the trees one winter and now the eye had filled in with new tree growth.

Time

This image was captured early evening during astronomical twilight.

Lighting

For earthshine you need very clear sky. High pressure weather systems are best. I always say the thinner the crescent the better the earthshine.

Equipment

This was captured with a Canon 60D and 100-400 mm Canon lens. At the time I was using a foto pro tripod but with the heavy lens I have since purchased a heavy Manfrotto tripod with a large ball head.

Inspiration

I love capturing thin crescents at night as you can capture the landscape in your images.

Editing

I do very little processing with my images. I like to capture the finished image directly in the camera. With this image though I cropped the image and added a reflection with a turquoise blue color. I was very happy with the results.

In my camera bag

The moon is usually my subject to photograph. I usually carry a Canon crop sensor camera and a 100-400 mm with a 1.4 extender. I use a crop sensor camera to get a longer focal distance. If I think I may need a wider angle I may bring a full frame camera with a 24-150 mm f4 lens as well. For the tripod I use a heavy Manfrotto. To avoid shake I use a remote. As I may spend hours out capturing the Moon I keep a Mars and a Snickers chocolate bar in the bag. In the summer I make sure I also carry some bug spray to keep the mosquito's away. Currently l use a Canon EOS 90 D with a 100-400 mm Canon 4.5-5.6f lens. Plus a Canon 1.4 extender. For wider angle I use a Canon 6D Mark 2 with an assortment for lenses.

Feedback

For capturing earthshine first try ISO 800 with a 1/2 second and 1 second exposure. Then adjust depending on the results . Up the ISO to 1600 or 3200 and check the results again. Try to not go beyond a 2 second exposure as the Moon is in motion. Clouds in front of the Moon will cause glare so make sure it is clear were the Moon is. If there is clouds around the Moon as long as not in front it will help add another element to the image.
