Behind The Lens

Location

Both photo's used in this image were taken in Bloordale Park in Etobicoke a suburb in west Toronto. The treeline when cropped just right is great for adding a refection to.

Time

The treeline was taken about 30 minutes before sunset when the westside of the park is in shadow. The close up of the clouds with the Moon was taken about 1 hours before sunset on a different day.

Lighting

The clarity of a blue sky Moon is best when the Moon starts to rise within 2 hours of the sunset.

Equipment

For the Moon my go to camera is a Canon 60Da and a Canon 400mm lens. Before I switched from bridge camera's to DSLR my go to camera for the Moon was a Canon SX50HS. I use a fotopro tripod.

Inspiration

I was in the park to capture the Moon and the treeline and crisp blue sky caught my eye.

Editing

I cropped the treeline close to the bottom of the stalks then added a closeup image of the Moon in a similar blue sky. Then I added a refection to give the illusion of water. I wanted to create a dreamy looking image and the close up Moon on the treeline and the crisp blue color worked well. I only added a slight bit of darkening. I used some simple photo processing software Photoscape.

In my camera bag

A tripod in one hand and a camera bag slung over my shoulder with my Canon 60Da and 400mm lens when capturing the Moon. I also squeeze a 24mm or 40mm lens in the bag in case I need to do a wide angle shot. An extra battery and microfiber cloth are also a must.

Feedback

If you have some easy to use photo software that will add a reflection I would try a number of cropped mages near the bottom of a treeline or clouds and use the software to add a refection . You will find the sweet spot of where to crop to create pleasing images. Adding a second image will be easy to add if they have similar color. It is best to try adding the second image to the front and back layer to find the best image and playing with the opacity of the added image.
