Simply a wonderful capture. That lake was a natural mirror when shooting. Well done, indeed.

Thanks, Charles. Maybe I'll see you there one day - it's well worth a visit.

I have to say this is one of the most beautiful images I have EVER seen. I'm tucking your name in a special place - some day I'll buy one to fill a large space on a wall. Should have placed first!!

Location
The image was taken at Loch Rusky, on the eastern boundary of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.Time
The shot was taken just after sunrise, before the surface mist had been burned off by the sun.Lighting
The lighting was fairly standard for that time of day - but it wasn't the lighting which was the most important aspect of the shot (see below).Equipment
Canon EOS 7D, Canon EFS 17-85mm zoom, Tripod.Inspiration
I was attracted by the calmness of the scene: the motionless boats, the mirror-calm water and the touch of surface mist.Editing
As with the majority of my shots, this was HDR processed (3 images @ ±2EV) in Photomatix and CS5. I tend to use Photomatix as gently as possible and only to produce a fully-toned image (no burnt highlights, no impenetrable shadows) that I can work on with CS5. I honestly can't remember what I did in CS5 - it varies according to the image - but I can tell you with 100% accuracy that I stopped when I thought I'd done enough. In my camera bag
These days: Canon EOS 5D and 7D bodies, Canon 17-40mm zoom, Canon 24-105mm zoom, Canon 100-400mm zoom. I also have a selection of ND and graduated ND filters.Feedback
Be prepared. Know in advance what time the sun rises; check the weather forecast to ascertain whether you'll get the conditions you want (in this case, I needed a few warm days to warm up the water, followed by a cold night to produce the morning mist); think on your feet if conditions are significantly different from what you'd envisaged.
