Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a studio during a workshop.

Time

It was taken in the afternoon, but using only studio lights during a workshop about flash photography indoors.

Lighting

We used only speelights to light this model, including one from above and one from the side as well as another speedlight behind her to light the background. The main light was a speedlight shot through an umbrella which you can see as a reflection in her sunglasses.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D mark 2 and a couple of speedlights!

Inspiration

I was teaching a workshop on how to use speedlights to shoot a model in a studio including using some modifiers such as an umbrella and grids. This was the best shot that I took at the workshop while teaching the attendees on how to use the lights.

Editing

I probably did very minimal post processing such as changing contrast and brightness on the image. I usually don't do heavy post processing in any of my photos unless I'm going for an HDR look.

In my camera bag

I primarily shoot with the Canon system, and for model photo shoots or other serious work I use the Canon 5D mark 3 camera, for events, landscape and street photography I usually use the Canon 60D camera and the 8mm Rokinon fisheye lens or the 24-105mm F4 L Canon lens. Sometimes if I want to travel light I use the Canon M camera with the 40mm f2.8 pancake lens on it. I also own a few speedlights with modifiers.

Feedback

Try to play with light and understand that in a studio a few speedlights are as a good as bigger studio lights. Using modifiers in a studio is very important and fun such as using an umbrella to bounce or shoot through, or using grids, funnels or any other type of flash modifiers. Experiment and have fun with different types of lighting and you will get great images!
