Behind The Lens

Location

I had the chance to take this picture during my Vacation in St Johns, Newfoundland

Time

I had just climbed the hill to get a better view of the ocean. It was my first time with a Zeiss 25mm lens and I was thrilled once I saw the image on the camera LCD. This photo was taken on August 4th , 2013.

Lighting

The weather was not good early in the morning and it cleared out after 9am. I was luck to have the Sun behind me for this composition. The light in the clouds produced a nice contrast with the indigo sky.

Equipment

It was shot on a Canon 5DmkII with a Zeiss 25mm F/2 lens, handheld.

Inspiration

I was inspired by Ansel Adams black and white landscape images with dark skies and I was trying to figure out if it was possible to achieve a similar effect with my equipment. I got lucky with the weather and the end result.

Editing

I had to use a graduated filter to brighten the exposure of the land area. After the black and white conversion, I put the blue color bar in -100 to get the black sky/ocean effect.

In my camera bag

A Canon 5DmkII with a 100-400mm Canon lens, a Zeiss 85mm F/1.4 lens and a Fuji X100S.

Feedback

Just travel. By doing that you will have a chance to see everything around you the same way as you were a child once. You will see things with a fresh hunger to understand the world around you. This will give you interesting images and a story to tell.
