Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my mothers backyard. It was near the end of the season and the flowers on the vines were starting to transform.

Time

It was in the afternoon when the sun was at its highest point. I remember the smells of the changing seasons coming, fall was in the air and the neighbors were BBQing.

Lighting

I remember being obsessed with blurred background and bokeh images at the time (still am). I was trying to balance both the lighting between the vines and the sun, while still off focusing the background. I finally got lucky after over 100 takes and snapped the shot.

Equipment

I used a Canon T2i with a 100mm 1:2.8 Macro Lens and really steady hands!

Inspiration

I wanted to capture its beauty of what others wouldnt see. This fascinating flower was turning in for the winter..it was wilting and the sun had left it at a crisp. I was proud after capturing its beauty as no one else but me would know mine and its secret.

Editing

I adjusted the colour balance for both the green and pink pigments ever so slightly to enhance what the eye was looking at. The program I used for this was ACDSee.

In my camera bag

I go on a lot of mini adventures so I typically make sure I have all of my batteries charged and ready. I also make sure I'm stocked on memory cards as its easy to go through a multiple of them when going for the right shot, especially with bokeh and macro photos. As for lenses, I always bring my Canon 50mm portrait lens, Macro 100mm lens, and a Canon Zoom Lens EF 75-300mm. Sometimes I cheat and use my cell phone with my attachable lenses as I find they accurately get a shot I can't always get quickly with my Canon.

Feedback

Being patient is key, especially if you want that blurred background shot with beautiful lighting. Taking 300 photos to get the right shot is worth every moment. The key is to also have fun and the shot will come naturally, enjoy where you are and what you are doing in that current moment. The memories you take from that day you will cherish forever.
