My husband and I were on Ocras Island in Washington state to celebrate our Anniversary for the weekend. We were on our way to the top of Mount Constitution in Moran State Park. We stopped along the road because there was some great fog coverage along the roads and trees and I by chance managed to be at the right spot to snap this photo.Time
We were in no hurry this day and took our time traveling over to the park. Once there we went down to a waterfall and then to one of the lakes to have a late picnic lunch. After this we decided to drive up to the top of Mount Constitution, as the views are suppose to be breathtaking. We were still not in a big rush as we knew we had about a hour before sunset when we stopped for me to take this picture around 4:30 pm on November 9th.Lighting
We were several hundred feet above sea level at this point and the fog was from the clouds at this height. They added a nice filter to the sunlight that was able to get past the evergreen trees of the forest, which allowed this magical moment to happen of just certain areas of the forest being lit up.Equipment
I used a Canon 7D with a 60mm Tamron lens at f6.3, 1/160 and ISO at 200.Inspiration
While on this weekend trip with my husband I wanted to practice taking my time, framing what I wanted, and feel it was worth taking the photo. So often it is to easy to just snap away and then I would end up with a lot of photos to filter through. It was while in this thought process that I saw the clouds rolling along the road and through the forest. I knew I wanted the photo with those elements. When looking around the two trees in the foreground formed a natural frame and window into the forest.Editing
I played with the black a little and the contrast. I then applied a filter that helped bring out the green that is lit up by the sunlight.In my camera bag
Well, this is an easy question, since I carry all my equipment with me. First, of course, is the camera body. I love my Canon 7D. I then have EF 18-55 mm that came with my Canon Rebel (the "gateway" camera that gets you hooked on photography), followed by my wide-angle Tonika 11-16 mm. My two go two lenses are both by Tamron - 70-300 mm and 60 mm. I enjoy using the both, but have found my 60 mm spends the most time on my camera due to the versatility of being able to capture photos like this one or use it for macro shots.Feedback
One of the main components needed for a photo such as this is a light fog. The fog cannot be to thick, as the sun needs to be able to filter through. From there it is a matter of finding the right spot in a forested area. It is actually good if you are able to visit some spots in the daylight to see what the ground and trees in the area look like. This will allow you to be prepared on where you are going when the weather conditions are right.
