This was taken on my first trip to Death Valley. We were supposed to be camping but a huge storm started to roll in!Time
After off-roading theough Death Valley for a few days and dealing with boring blue skies, we finally ended up here in the late afternoon on November 15, 2011 to watch a storm roll in.Lighting
I really wanted to capture the dark clouds to contrast the bright white of the salt flats. I love seeing the dark and the light collide with those mountains in the middle. The lighting this time of day was absolutely perfect.Equipment
This was shot with my Canon Rebel and Tameron wide angle. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I have always been a fan of photography as long as I can remember. I got my first camera when I was 9 years old and experimented depth of field with my stuffed animals lined up on the stairs of our house. I took photography classes in high school and used up that camera until it no longer worked. I started to focus on other things instead of replacing my camera. Eventually, on a random trip to Las Vegas, I wandered into Peter Lik's art gallery. I was blown away by his work and was completely inspired to start my photography again. I went out and bought a new camera and planned a trip to photograph Death Valley.Editing
I took this photo several times at different exposures to make sure I got the best of the lights and darks. I shoot in RAW and use Capture One to edit. Not much was needed for this one. I added a vignette and upped the contrast a tiny bit, but that was it!In my camera bag
I've got a really great hiking camera bag that holds my Canon Rebel, my wide angle, zoom, and prime lenses. Loving landscape photography, I never go anywhere without my wide angle.Feedback
Death Valley was so much more than I expected. There's so many different landscapes to see and photograph. The weather is constantly changing, making for some very beautiful skies. I suggest just wandering around! I was lucky enough to go with some friends who had off-road vehicles and we got to experience more than the average person. I highly recommend doing that if you can! It was a trip I'll never forget.
