Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, an amazing, free, urban zoo!

Time

This photo was taken during one of my frequent visits to the zoo. The lion habitat offers many free line-of-sight views so no worrying about glass or fences.

Lighting

All natural lighting on an overcast day.

Equipment

Camera was Nikon D5100 with Tokina 100mm f2.8 AT-X Pro macro lens. Hand held, although I might have used a fence for stability.

Inspiration

I always find the zoo animals intriguing. Don't you often wonder what is going through their minds as they look straight at you??

Editing

Post starts in Lightroom followed by Topaz Studio. I like the contrast controls in Topaz better than Lightroom as they give you more granular control.

In my camera bag

I typically just take the lens on the camera plus one additional depending on what type of photography I plan on doing. I am an urban dweller but there are an abundance of natural areas in Chicago to explore with great insect/flower/bird opportunities. And, obviously, the architecture offers a never ending source of imagery. I will also frequently use a monopod, especially with longer lenses.

Feedback

Zoo animals can be fun to shoot since they typically are not moving much which give good opportunity to really dial in a shot with a long lens. Inside habitats, however, offer the typical lighting challenges. I like overcast days as it eliminates the harsh shadows.
