Location
This photo was taken from a parking garage overlooking a main track intersection for Chicago's elevated train. The garage is at the southeast corner of Wells and Lake streets.Time
Shot at mid-day when the sun was high.Lighting
This is a shot I intend to take at different times of the day and year as the sun will change due to tall buildings surrounding this location. Taken in early July the sun was very high in the sky which minimized shadows.Equipment
This is a hand-held shot, leaning out of the garage to get this perspective. Camera was a Nikon D5100 using a Nikon 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 lens. Exposure was 24mm, 1/80 at f7.1, ISO 100.Inspiration
This is a shot I have seen many times before and wanted to include it in my portfolio. It is one of those "must" shots for a Chicago photographer. The "L" train system offers many opportunities for creative shots and has been used in many movies, especially chase scenes under the elevated structure.Editing
I use Lightroom CC for initial processing followed by both Photomatix and Topaz Clarity. In my camera bag
I typically have the 16-85 lens on my camera for my walking-around shoots. I find it very versatile and good optically. If I pack for variety I also include my Tokina 100mm f2.8 and Nikon 70-300mm VR.Feedback
Many photographers want to have this shot with two trains executing opposing turns. Best time of day for this is the morning or evening rush periods when the most trains are running. It's just a matter of waiting for that moment. I'll be out again looking for that shot!
