Location
The architecture in Chicago along the Chicago River is fantastic. This is a view that includes the new Trump Tower, century old Wrigley Building and the Mies van der Rohe designed IBM/AMA building. The sky was filled with wonderful clouds.Time
I was breaking the rules with this shot - at midday.Lighting
Although I like the color version of this shot, going b/w gives it a more dramatic look to me. The sun was midday but fully illuminating all of the buildings, some of which would have been in the shadows later.Equipment
I shot this with a Nikon D5100 and Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens. I used a concrete barrier along the river as the tripod.Inspiration
There are many great views along the Chicago River of various architecture - new and old. I think the new Trump Tower has added nicely to the Chicago skyline and works well with architectures from different eras.Editing
Lightroom for the basic adjustments and Photomatix for the 3 shot HDR and b/w processing. In my camera bag
I usually have my Nikon D7100 with the Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR as my everyday setup. When I am out looking for nature or insect shots I'll use the Tokina AT-X 100 PRO D or the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR.Feedback
There are many hours of the day with different lighting available along the Chicago River for beautiful architecture and reflection shots. Many of the buildings have glass facades which create wonderful reflections.
