Behind The Lens

Location

This image scene was built in the main section of my studio.

Time

This image from what I remember, was taken in studio, at high noon. All natural light from the west facing studio windows was blocked by double sided, 6'x4.5' custom made blackout panels, that are white on one side, and black on the other, the white side was facing in, towards the subject.

Lighting

Lighting was achieved using 2- strobes, a white shoot through umbrella behind and below the subject to expose the black silk twist background, and a 2x3 soft-box, camera left as key. Camera right, were 2- white reflectors (blackout panels mentioned earlier), as a side fill, one behind the scene and one in front.

Equipment

Nikon D7100, Nikon 105mm 2.8f G series glass, 2- Profoto D1 500w/s strobes, 1 profoto large translucent white umbrella, 1- Photoflex 2x3 Light Dome Soft-Box, 2- black 6'x8' silk shears, 1- 4'x8' sheet of black lacquer coated aluminum, assorted stands, A-clamps.

Inspiration

I was doing a vibrant calendar series themed on high heel shoes which referenced a subject that was relevant to the month in some way (this image represented New Years 2013), i.e March' calendar was St. Patrick based and April was Easter. So I guess "New Years", was my inspiration for this particular image.

Editing

Post processing was achieved using Adobe Lightroom, and Photoshop CC, using a Wacom Intuos Pro Medium tablet along with the X-rite color passport, and its accompanying Lightroom plugin.

In my camera bag

My everyday carry bag has a Nikon D7100 body, Nikon 24-70mm 2.8f G, Nikon 50mm 1.8 G, Nikon SB700 Speelight, Camranger, iPad, BlackRapid Sport, and a spare set of batteries and charger for each. I always leave tripods in my vehicles in case I need one. This is my everyday, normal carry bag for those random moments an opportunity to take a picture arises. The bag I take on planned shoots is completely different and normally will have a Nikon D800e body, a spare body, normally a Nikon 70-200mm 2.8f G VRII, and everything else is dependent on the shoot plan, and what I think will be needed to achieve the required look or effect (who wants to take everything? LOL).

Feedback

Keep your ISO as close to 100 (or your cameras native base ISO) as possible, shoot shallow DOF (in this case f3) for effect, AND, to get slower shutter speeds (in this case 8/10) to absorb ambient residual light after the strobes fire, this (IMO) allows for greater saturation of color information on the sensor. The Silks in the background were intentionally crossed over each other, to get the soft leading lines to the subject.
