I took this photo a few winters ago while I was living at my sister's house. It was the first big snow storm of the season and that was my view out the back door into their big yard with the chicken coups.Time
This was taken pretty early in the morning shortly after I woke up. I knew we were expecting snow the night before and was going to let the dogs out and as soon as I saw the snow I ran to get my camera before the dogs went out and left a bunch of footprints. This is one of my favorite winter shots.Lighting
This was taken with just the light of the cloudy sky. No additional lighting, and it was while I was standing in their mudroom through the glass of the screen door, so the room I was in was dark while the light from outside really turned out to be the perfect lighting.Equipment
Surprisingly enough this was taken with my iPhone 5! No fancy lenses or cameras for this shot. Just my iPhone through the glass of the door, simple enough, right? That's the great thing about phones these days... the fancier they get, the easier it is to take great shots!Inspiration
A beautiful winter day that I'd been waiting for! I ended up getting my "good" camera out later that day and spent some time taking pictures around town since it had been so long since we'd had a nice snow storm. I just love the white blankety snow that envelopes the small town. It seems that with the global warming that's taking place, heavy snows are happening less and less. When they do happen, I'll be nearby with a camera without a doubt!Editing
I have several versions of this photo and if I remember right on this version, I did some light post processing but nothing over the top. I didn't want to take away much from the original look of the melting snow and water droplets on the door I was looking through. In my camera bag
I always have my iPhone, a Canon D60 with a 24-85mm lens and an 80-200mm lens, a macro tube extension and 0.43 58mm wide angle lens w/macro adapter. I'm just getting started in photography so my equipment is sort of at a minimum. I also have two tripods, one large and one smaller.Feedback
Always take the shot, even it's just with your phone. A big fancy camera doesn't always mean the photo is going to end up better. And practice, practice, practice, even if you're a pro. You'll never know what you need to improve on or how to make those improvements if you don't take the chance and the shot. Once you see the end result, you can see what you could've done differently and make that change next time... or at least apply the process for improvement to your next set of shots. Don't be afraid of taking a lousy shot! All photographers know that you may take 500 shots and end up with 3 great ones. It's getting the perfect shot at the perfect moment with the perfect lighting, etc.... that's not easy to do and a whole bunch of NOT perfect photos will happen in the process of getting the one perfect shot. And remember you don't need a fancy camera to get a good shot. You need a good eye, not great equipment. My uncle just said to me yesterday that some of the best shots he's every seen were taken with a pinhole camera out of a coffee can. The best camera equipment in the world won't get you the best shot, but a good eye will get you a good shot.
