Behind The Lens

Location
I took this photo in my kitchen. My cat was sitting in one of the chairs around our table, peaking through the back at the birds eating at the feeder right outside the window.
Time
Around 11AM. Late morning to early afternoon.
Lighting
I depended on the morning sunlight coming through the window my feline friend was looking out of. I did not use any flashes or artificial lighting. The lights in the room were switched off.
Equipment
Nikon D5100 and my Nikon 85mm micro telephoto lens.
Inspiration
I had just bought the lens, and wanted to experiment with it. My cat has always been my perfect model, so I decided to use him. He was hungrily gazing out the kitchen window at the birds, while sitting ever so nicely in a chair. It provided me with an excellent opportunity.
Editing
I only cropped the image. In the original, part of the chair was blocking the side of Tyson's face. It was distracting, so I cropped it in close to his expression. I love the result, cropping the image gave it a much different perspective.
In my camera bag
Two camera bodies (D5100 and D7000), 85mm micro telephoto lens, 18-55mm kit lens, 55-200mm zoom lens, and an 18-105mm kit lens. All of the products are Nikon.
Feedback
Experiment with lenses that give you a shallow depth of field. It may give your image a unique perspective. Originally, I hated this lens for that exact reason. After taking this experimental image, I began to respect it. This is one of the cooler photos I have taken, in my opinion. This is because it is very different from anything I have done previously. The shallow depth of field limited what I could have in focus severely. It made me ask myself a difficult question: have the eyes in focus, or the nose? People often say the eyes are windows to the soul. In many photos I've seen (even feline portraits), photographers always focus on the eyes. I felt like it was an unspoken rule. Well, I tried both. As it turns out, having the eyes in focus but not the nose didn't look right to me. I attempted to take a photo with Tyson's nose in focus. He surprised me by licking his lips as I pressed the shutter down. If I hadn't decided to break the unspoken eye rule at that very moment, I would've missed out on this fun photograph.
