Location
Like most of my photos, it was taken in my backyard.Time
Late afternoon... around 4PM, possibly 5.Lighting
I used natural lighting for this image. The sun illuminated the dandelion beautifully. The darkness and shadows of the rest of the image were edited in.Equipment
Nikon D5100 and a Nikon 85mm micro telephoto lens.Inspiration
I took this photo for a digital photography assignment in high school. The original idea started with a clover, but we later changed it to a dandelion for the eye-catching color. Since it was spring (early May), I wanted to take a nice, seasonal photo, resulting in me forcing my friend to pick up a handful of dirt along with a dandelion.Editing
I edited the photo using the website iPiccy. I adjusted the contrast on the dandelion alone to start off with, and then edited the rest of the image around it to keep it the center of attention. For the rest of the image, I toned down the exposure a lot, added some shadows, and then added a tiny bit of contrast. I then used a light sepia for an interesting color tint on the hands, and paired it with iPiccy's "gritty" effect. For the gritty effect, I removed the "noise" option it gives you, adjusted the darkness accordingly, and then faded it out 40-50%. My friend's red shirt was still too eye-catching at this point. To remedy this, I used the Duotone option. I made the two colors black and white, removed as much brightness as possible, removed the contrast, and faded the effect a tiny bit because it looked too dark. I only applied the Duotone effect to her shirt. In my camera bag
Two camera bodies (Nikon D5100 and Nikon D7000), Nikon 55-200mm zoom lens, Nikon 18-55mm kit lens, Nikon 85mm micro telephoto lens, and a 18-105mm Nikon kit lens.Feedback
Try creating the tone you want to achieve BEFORE you take the image. It saved you a lot of trouble trying to edit the image and redesigning it completely to give it the right mood. Here, I hadn't decided on what I wanted in terms of tone when I took the original image. Hours of post-processing later, and I'm still not completely satisfied with the overall feeling the image gives. So please, plan it out ahead of time. But if you want to create an image that looks like this, use natural lighting for the original image and have your subject face the light source. Get on the same level as your subject's hands, and shoot the picture. Keep in mind the effects I used and talked about earlier. It gives the image an interesting tint.
