Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken just outside of my hometown, Secunda, in South Africa. It was such a beautiful day, not to be wasted at home, I decided to go for a drive and see the sun set. I stopped near this old defunct gold mine which made for an amazing photo.

Time

The time was about 6.30 PM in the summer. The earth was cooling down, the skies clearing out and the wind calming down. A most calming scene.

Lighting

I was at the right place at the right time. The sun and mother nature supplied me with the most beautiful natural light, splitting into a mix of beautiful colors, with the darkness of the night creeping on the setting sun.

Equipment

This was actually shot with my phone camera at the time. I was quite impressed with what one can accomplish with the limitations of a phone's camera.

Inspiration

It was the perfect time of day to go outdoors and take in the last bit of sunlight on a summers eve. I figured I would rather go out to the country side on less traveled roads, just to be by myself. As luck would have it I came across this perfect scene, almost like a painting. It just goes to show, don't go out and seek the perfect shot to take, but rather go live life and enjoy it, and you will discover beauty worth capturing.

Editing

As with most photos, and especially landscape photography, a little editing is always necessary. I usually play around with white balance and saturation. I usually would work on an image not long after it was captured, and then I leave it for a day or two before going back to it. I find this helps me focus on other aspects and appreciate the image as a whole.

In my camera bag

This photo was taken with my mobile phone, but usually I will have my Nikon D3200 with it's kit lenses and zoom lens, and I'll always try photos with my GoPro for a different perspective. Other than that, I have a small Polaroid instant camera, tripod, and my bag is filled with cables, sd cards and GoPro attachments.

Feedback

Everyone has their own idea and emotions to what is beautiful or what really touches them. No one person can judge what you like or connect with. The same with photos, while it might not be the "perfect" capture, or the image might be overexposed or whatever, if you like it then capture it, share it with the world. Go out and live life, take it all in and take photos of your journey. That is all that matters
