This is a photo of my horse Classic as he was just out leaping & jumping out in the pasture & luckily I had my camera in hand!Time
Late afternoon from 3:00 p.m., on is the best time of day to shoot as I live in Florida and it can get pretty bright and hot earlier during the day. This is & will always be one of the most exciting & fun images to capture, as he is very animated and fast. The pasture is quite large yet I don't want to capture the image from too far away nor do I want to be too close as well!Lighting
The late afternoon sun was behind me and used to highlight the horse and darken the background of the woods behind him to give depth which also hides the fence from view.Equipment
This photo was taken with my Nikon D5000 which I have had for many years, along with my 70-300 mm, using natural lighting.Inspiration
Classic is always great to photograph, he is 1/2 Arabian & 1/2 Saddlebred with a lot of action and sweetness, and of course my boy which makes it all the better!Editing
I used Lightroom & Photoshop with just some basic edits to bring out detail in the horse & darken some of the back ground. In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon 50 mm 1.8 & my big boy 70-300 mm in my bag if I am going out to the barn or out and about in nature. I love the 50 mm as it is quick and easy to have in hand, however, the distance I can shoot with the 300 mm is great, even if it is a heavy lens to carry around. I have had my Nikon D5000 for many years and I plan on purchasing a Nikon D7200 as an upgrade before the end of the year.Feedback
Action shots are tricky especially when you are focusing on horses! Be prepared to move around and use a fast shutter speed of 1/250 or faster! Check your ISO always to keep it low & to avoid noise and try to be aware of your surroundings & backgrounds. Shooting in the morning or late afternoon is always a better time when you are using natural light. And last but not least think about what you want to capture & always be safe!
