Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home in the front yard.

Time

This was taken in the late afternoon as that is when this little guy ventures out to the front yard. Usually he spends his morning in the backyard until later later in the day. He is my favorite squirrel to watch as he is so comical & always playing.

Lighting

This is all natural lighting, it was late afternoon and the sun is behind me, he is in the shade of the tree, which really made a great shot showing his lovely face and coloring.

Equipment

This was taken with my older camera the Nikon D5000 and my 55-200 ml lens & late afternoon sun. I was able to get close to him without physically getting to close as not to make him hide or run behind the tree.

Inspiration

As mentioned above, he spends most of his morning and early afternoon in the backyard. We live in a townhouse and he likes to run up the side of the roof and jump down into the trees that are in front of our sliding window, which is where I watch him. He on some days will do this continually for several runs, and you can hear his little feet scamper up, then the tree branches shake. I believe he is just being a funny teenager & having fun. I love to watch him in the morning because he is better than watching a cartoon. He is so crazy, he jumps, does summer salts in the air, throws sticks up in the air and spins around like a dog! He just cracks me up, his mate just rests on a branch and watches him. Later in the afternoon he is busy locating food in our front yard.

Editing

I always use Lightroom CC to process from the start, local adjustments, then send to Photoshop CC to finalize. This is just as natural as the shot was. I didn't use any real processing to any extent.

In my camera bag

I always have my 55-200 ml lens and either my 85 ml 1.4 or 35 ml. I have since as of last year upgraded from the Nikon D5000 to the D7100, which I love. I have lately been learning to use my 85 ml my newest for portraits, especially of my Grandaughter when she visits and the horses, dogs, etc. Some more learning to come.

Feedback

I love to capture wildlife around my home or out at the barn where I board my horse and of course out on the trail. The 55-200 ml lens is great to get close to any activity I may find, without causing fear to the animals & keeping myself safe. Sometimes it takes a little patience but it is all worth the photo in the end. Words of wisdom, take your time and give some thought to where the light is coming from and make sure your background is what you would like and and take the shot. You never know you might take a prize winning shot. Just being outdoors with my camera is fun and it can really make you notice things you wouldn't normally see. And don't forget to enjoy every minute!
